Where do I stand?

Two problems overlap concerning Voter ID, both threatening you freedom and rights as guaranteed by the United States Constitution to you and to the state of Missouri.

The Problem:  Every national election cycle, somewhere in the United States a scandal erupts concerning the voting system. Now Missouri’s current Secretary of State, believes that voters should be permitted to vote without proper photo identification, arguing that requiring such identification is inconvenient.  This is voter fraud just waiting to happen.

The Fix:  I will work with Missouri legislators to require that state issued photo identification be presented at the time an individual arrives to vote.  In addition, if an individual cannot afford a state issued identification card because of economic reasons, the state will provide that identification at no charge.

The Problem:  There is a point the federal government is intruding too deeply in our personal affairs.  In 2005, the federal government passed the ‘Real ID Act’ that:

  1. …requires that too much personal information be placed on your identification (in most cases, your driver’s license), including your finger print and your Social Security number.  Maybe your DNA.  The people in Washington, D.C. are priming the cannons of Identity Theft.

  2. …takes away the state’s right to govern the method of issuing driver’s licenses.  The federal law requires that state issued identification must look the same.  By the way, each state, including Missouri, must bare the cost of this federal requirement.

The Fix:  I will work with our state legislators to reject the federal ‘Real ID Act,’ so that Missouri can then limit the personal information required to issue such identification.

Our rights to privacy, our right to free and open voter access, our right of state sovereignty have all been compromised – This must be reversed and reversed now.

Should the homeless have the right to vote? Or the residents of nursing homes?
Also, how can we get a independent of any party into a presidential election? I
am asking out of true concern. I like the answers you present on.

The homeless should have the right to vote, as long as they can get proper id,
same for nursing home residents. All Americans should have the right, that being
said voter id is extremely important. Our elections must be as fair and correct
as possible. To get an indpendent in will take time, there are a lot of parties
like the Libertarians and others like the American Centrist Party who have good
ideas and leaders ready to lead but current ballot access regulations ( made up
by the Dems and Reps) make it extremely difficult, this is the first and IMO one
of the most important hurdles, but it can and must be overcome. Vote Upchurch
for Secretary of State!!!!!

The main concern that I have with being required to show ID at the voting
location is video cameras. If a video camera sees your ID and sees the time
that you enter and leave the polling booth, then the your vote could be directly
tied to a time stamp if the voting is electronic.

I would also advocate that
any electronic voting should be backed up by a physical paper ballot that would
be counted should the security of the electronic ballot be comprimised. The
current electronic balloting systems are very easy for people to crack and
change massive blocks of votes with a few keystrokes with no way for anybody to
tell that the votes have been changed.

You're in luck, because all of the electronic voting machines in Missouri are
backed up by a paper trail. So the problems that are possible in other states
related to electronic voting, just don't exist here in Missouri Immediatly upon
voting, you can see that your choices are printed to a paper record, which is
auditable.

I must say that I'm highly in favor of the positions you take.
You've got my
vote!

In regards to the discussion at hand...
The electronic voting system we
have in place today is very flawed.

Even if [best case scenario] votes are
immediately printed and viewable to the voter, it doesn't take away from the
possibility of the computer changing the vote at virtually any time, on purpose
or by error. The difference would only be noticed at the time of an audit,
whenever that is required and if it is ever even performed.

If the functioning
of these systems are not fully transparent (available to public analysis) then
by no means should they be classified as safe.

Bruce Schneier presents a much
better alternative to the voting machines of today. For that and more on
electronic voting, check out his

What about just making state ID (not to be confused with driver's license) free
to everybody? They cannot be that expensive to produce, and I'm sure the
revenue could be easily obtained by closing some illegal governmental
department.
