The Secretary of State's office serves a broad range of customers,including business owners, students, investors, genealogy researchers, county clerks, librarians, brokerage houses, and voters. The Secretary of State has various responsibilities, including ensuring the smooth operation of elections, business and professional licensing, as well as the storage and publication of official government documents in the State Archives and Missouri State Library.

One of the most important job roles of the Secretary of State is acting as the head elections officer. In this capacity, the Secretary of State works with the various county election authorities to ensure that elections run efficiently, fairly, and free of fraud. Every qualified Missourian should have the opportunity to easily register and vote without hassle. Most importantly every citizen of Missouri should be able to trust that their vote was counted accurately.

The office of Secretary of State also serves as the first place business owners in Missouri, go before beginning their new business. The office also servers as the primary source an investor consults when learning about financial advisors or brokers conducting business in our state. When a company decides to offer a security, such as a stock, the Secretary of State determines whether or not that the offering is fair. Because the Missouri Secretary of State is responsible for ensuring compliance with state securities laws, the position entails a great deal of responsibility in protecting Missouri investors from fraudulent investment schemes.

Another role of the Secretary of States office is to house all the historic documents about Missouri in the State Archives and Missouri State Library. The Missouri Secretary of State authenticates and publishes official government documents on behalf of the state of Missouri.
